Exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery

Madeleine Winch: States of Being

26 September – 23 November 2014

Madeleine Winch: States of Being is a Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery Touring Exhibition.

Winch’s art and the eloquence it extracts can be found in painting after print after painting. She has set herself on becoming a social commentator, drawn from her personal experience and outward observations and in this, she has truly succeeded. This is a survey exhibition comprising paintings and prints (monotypes and collographs) from a period of over 20 years. Her work is inspired by human relationships and personal states of being.

Through her paintings Winch depicts the archetypal woman in domestic settings attempting to balance life as a mother and professional, in this case the artist herself. Her universal characters are drawn from her own experiences and those of her daughters. The paintings are all about the parts of her life that sustain and inspire her, her family and her art.

The amphorae collograph prints depict her family’s time on the Greek island of Paros and the idyllic life they led there. All of these works are printed using the French alla pupai technique.

The interior still-life monotype prints suggest the warmth and comfort of the domestic setting.

Artist talk with Madeleine Winch

Madeleine has recently been a student at Encaustic classes with Daniella Woolf and myself, though I don’t think there are any encaustic works in this exhibition.

Do you have some experience with encaustic, but need some help to achieve the things you want? Need help from a troubleshooter? Want to make a satin smooth surface? Want advice on how to make a metre long palette collage? These and other questions will be answered by Doctor Daniella, the encaustic queen.

The emphasis here will be on achieving what the student wants, so only those with some experience should apply.

Only six students in a studio set up for encaustic, so you will receive plenty of personal attention.

Daniella Woolf is coming!

Daniella Woolf is coming to Australia next month and will be doing two workshops in Sydney. She’ll also be teaching at TAFTA in Geelong, but her workshop there is fully booked.

Workshop One:
Improvise with Encaustic at Reverse Garbage.

Hut 9, (on the left after you drive in, just before Reverse Garbage.)
The Addison Road Community Centre
142 Addison Road
Marrickville NSW 2204
Dates: Friday 12th, Saturday 13th September, 10am to 4pm.

Cost: $270 plus some cash to spend at Reverse Garbage.

Our first exercise will be procuring all our “art supplies” at Reverse Garbage. We will then transform said supplies into encaustic art works. We will explore the versatility of encaustic medium, which can be polished, carved, scraped, layered, collaged, dipped, cast, modeled, sculpted, textured. We could be doing collage, sculpture, assemblage, working on or off a flat surface. Be prepared to improvise with your materials and wax! It is best if the student has some previous encaustic experience.

There is plenty of parking at the community centre. Please bring something to contribute to a communal lunch. There is a simple kitchen. Tea and Coffee will be provided.
